D3A Site
The D3A site must satisfy these requirements:
- minimal environmental impact,
- minimal First Nations impact,
- no interference with other telescopes on the site,
- easy access to power and data communications.
There are two options:
- Between CHIME and the 26-m Galt Telescope indicated by the blue dot in the aerial photograph below. This would require the removal of a number of poles from the 22-MHz array.
- North of CHIME on an unused portion of the Synthesis Telescope track between Dish 4 and Dish 5.
Here is an aerial view of the DRAO site:
This image was obtained from Bing Maps.
Synthesis Telescope track characteristics
- ~300 m in length
- ~150 m at East end unused
- rail spacing = 6.4 m
- tie dimensions: 8.24 m × 0.36 m × 0.36 m
- tie spacing = 1.26 m
- gap between ties = 0.9 m
(Spacings are centre-to-centre.)
