---+ Information for New Lab Members
Accounts and other information
- Ensure you have a valid McGill ID, then go see Louise in the main physics office (either rm 108 or at 3641 university street - they have relocated temporarily to 3641 for most of 2018) and ask her to grant you card-swiper access for the Rutherford building. This will get you through the doors that are locked evenings and weekends (yes - sadly you'll probably be using it a lot!).
- There are photocopiers in the mail room and the third floor across from the elevator. You can use your McGill ID card to obtain access. If you do this however its likely that you will be billed unless you've arranged something with Matt /Louise. Alternatively, there is a pre-paid copy card inside the key draw in the lab.
- Ask somebody in our lab for the lab door code - they're expecting you and will be happy to tell you the code.
- Group members share one login for this wiki http://kingspeak.physics.mcgill.ca/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome. Username WinterlandUser and password _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. You should of course sign up for your own account: TWiki/TWikiRegistration
Attention: you must not share the door combination or any password with anyone, unless you've been given permission to do so (e.g you've been informed a new member is arriving and been properly introduced).
- You'll find lots of useful information here with regards to many different subjects (printing, shipping...) Internal/WebHome
- McGill offers Office 365 to all students free of charge. This also comes with access to onedrive.
Bitbucket repositories
It's likely that you'll need to have access to one or more code repositories. In general our laboratory stores its code on www.bitbucket.org. You should sign up for an account. Our repositories use git. If you're new to this try following the tutorial here
https://www.atlassian.com/git/tutorials/what-is-git
- If you work on mm related stuff the main bit bucket project containing the repositories is: https://bitbucket.org/account/user/winterlandcosmology/projects/PROJ. You will need to request access from one of the admins e.g Adam, Gavin
- If you work on radio related stuff the main bit bucket project containing the repositories is: https://bitbucket.org/account/user/chime/projects/CODE. Please contact Richard Shaw at UBC requesting access.
More ramblings
- Ensure you're on the department email lists, such as grads-astro (for astrophysics grad students), astrophysics@physics.mcgill.ca (for anyone involved with astrophysics at McGill), and seminars-ASTRO@physics.mcgill.ca (to find out about seminars - everyone welcome).
- The lab and our group is a collective effort - we can make it great and a whole lot of fun by working together. Your ideas and improvements are welcome! Let's make our lab environment the best anywhere.
- Borrowing stuff: you may work on personal projects in the lab using the lab tools (hot-rod your stereo amplifier or whatever) so long as it doesn't interfere with other people's research or use up lab supplies. The philosophy is that no matter what type of hardware you are working on in the lab, you'll be learning something. However do not take any lab tools outside without asking and signing it out (e.g. do not take a screwdriver or drill home!).
- Printing costs trees and money - please use it responsibly, see PrinterSetup.
